January 15, 1865
At the 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher, NC, 19-year-old USMC Corporal Andrew Tomlin of Middle Township, Cape May County, had his men hold the line against a Rebel attack and rescued a Marine who was wounded. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.

December 29, 1812
The USS Constitution, under the command of Princeton-born naval Commodore William Bainbridge, defeated HMS Java off Brazil. Although Bainbridge was wounded twice, the fight demonstrated his men’s superior training and marksmanship.

January 2, 1777
Following the Second Battle of Trenton along Assunpink Creek, which resulted in a stalemate, General George Washington disengaged his army from contact with the British and slipped away during the night, headed for Princeton.

Camp Kilmer, NJ, located just north of New Brunswick in Piscataway. The camp was activated in June 1942.

April 6, 1944: Mrs. Mary V. Duby joined American Legion Post #128 in Teaneck, NJ, becoming the first female American Legionnaire in the state.

In 1924, Colonel John B. Schoffel, the regular army instructor/adviser for the NJ National Guard, landed on the Sea Girt parade ground in a Navy airship.
